An iPad mini case has surfaced, suggesting that the smaller version of Apple’s tablet will feature a rear camera, contrary to recent reports.

Accessory manufacturers are – if the rumours are to be believed – often among the first to be given the heads-up about the measurements and features of new products like the iPad mini. GottaBeMobile has posted pictures of cases it claims are for the upcoming iPad mini, and they tell us quite a lot about the smaller iPad.

Each cut-out in the case tells a story. The three at the rear show that the iPad mini will use stereo speakers, or at least a dual outlet system, and that the tablet is likely to use the same microSD-sized connector as the iPhone 5. Volume controls are on the right edge, as in the current iPad, as is a cut-out for the switch used to disable screen rotation or access silent mode in the current model.

The most important feature detailed in the case, though, is the camera. There’s a clear circular cut-out for a rear sensor, with conflicts with recent leaked photos claiming to be of the iPad mini’s rear – sans camera. We did think they looked pretty suspect at the time, though. There doesn’t appear to be room for an LED flash in the casing, so don’t expect anything too special.

The other cut-outs are for the headphone jack, up top, and – potentially – a microphone. This gives the iPad mini a slightly better hardware features set than the Google Nexus 7. But will it be as cheap?

In recent weeks, rumours have coagulated around a few core specs for the iPad mini. It’s likely to feature a 7.85in 1,024 x 768 pixel screen. This is the same resolution as the first and second-gen iPads, but with an equal number of pixels packed into a smaller screen, sharpness will be much greater. Not quite to new iPad levels, but then the iPad mini is likely to sell for less than its full-size brother.

The iPad mini may launch in just over a month, on September 12 when the iPhone 5 is rumoured to get its official outing.
